“Beauty comes when fashion succeeds.”Coco Channel While people think of African fashion as being banal and only targeted towards a specific niche (Africans), my perception of it is, I believe beyond most clichés. I view African Fashion as an eternal sensation; it is an irrevocably indispensable means to pass on the beauty and uniqueness of a culture worldwide. By "African prints", we refer to what "us" west Africans traditionally call "ankara". Ankara falls into diverse categories; we have Vlisco prints, Dutch wax prints, Veritable Dutch Holandais etc.. It is debated that African prints, in spite of what most think do not take their essence from Africa. “An image of ‘African fabric’ isn't necessarily authentically [and wholly] African” says Nigerian-British contemporary artist Yinka Shonibare. The Arts of tribal printing on textile is said to have originated from countries such as Switzerland, England, Holland and other European countries; the designs and textile however derive from Indonesian culture. African prints entered the west African markets during the 16th century and have since then been adopted by Africans who have taken it to a whole new level on the arts, design and fashion scale.
