BBC reports 227 passengers on the aircraft- 153 Chinese, 38 Malaysians (including children), a few passengers came from France, New Zealand, Ukraine, Taiwan, Russia and the Netherlands. Having departed from Kuala Lumpur airport in Malaysia at 00:41 local time, the plane was due to take up to a maximum of 6 hours before reaching its destination in Beijing China-- however, according to Malaysia Airlines, flight MH370 lost contact one hour after take off.
Due to the fact that no distress signal was sent off from the jet, investigations have come to consider criminal involvement in the matter. on March 15, the Malaysian Prime Minister Najib announced that the jet's "ACARS" which allows information to be transmitted from planes to the ground systems was cut off after the plane had crossed the Malaysian east coast. Information taken from satellites suggest that the plane flew for another seven hours after contact was lost with Airline Control Services on ground floor.
At the moment, the principal theory that provides an explanation for the missing jet is highjacking. This theory was made public by the Malaysian Prime Minister who speculated there was "deliberate action on the plane".
Aside from the investigations conducted on two Iranian men who had been traveling with fake passports (no links were made between the two men and terrorist groups), speculations and theories do not cease to come up. Despite the unsuccessful sea searches and bearing in mind that the ruling out of poor weather, mechanical miscalculations or errors from pilots should not be an option, most assume the occurrence of a plane crash.
